Katrina
My sister has always called me Katrina (a variant of my real name Katherine). It breaks my heart to hear that name right now.
I have nothing useful to say, other than to add yet another link to the Red Cross donation page.
But I believe this post, by Scott Lynch, is useful and powerful. [language warning]
(I found the link in a comment on this Burningbird post.)

There really isn't much to say but...
"Thousands of Americans are dead or dying, not because they refused to evacuate, but because they were too poor or too sick to get out without help - and help wasn't provided. Many have yet to receive any help at all."

I'm encouraging others to donate their money, their time or their blood. We will need all three in the coming months. And I'm also encouraging others to sedate their sadness with poetry - reading it and writing it. I will write an (albeit most likely bad) poem for anyone who donates time, money or blood. For more info, visit http://everythingandnothing.typepad.com/katrinapoetry. I want to stifle all of the bickering with screams of poetry.

Hey Katherine.. That name isn't $hit to be bothered by.. just mother nature getting her groove on. It upsets me to know that over the last few years I KNEW FOR 100% FACT that a hurricane would have that effect and it would not take the biggest or the wettest to cause the problem. What bothers me most is that people knew it and did not reinforce the little insignificant walls that were built to protect an ocean side (below sea level) way of life..
SO OKAY.. enough about being pissed that nothing was done before hand.. NOW it's time to say F-IT-ALL and do something. I have tried to do my part by helping to start KatrinasAngels.com in an effort to help out the people with no place to live or work. My blog follows this past week of creating the web site but it doesn't touch on the people much.
There has been a huge, actually overwhelming, number of people signing up to volunteer with Katrina's Angels even before the site is done. I signed on board in the first few hours of the idea being spurred and now there is a boat load of people wanting to help out in any way shape or form. There are even people who suffer from MS or other diseases and illnesses who signed up with us the moment they got wind of our idea to bring jobs and homes to the people in need.
So really, you need to hear "Katrina" and be reminded of how beneath all of the bullshit of the pathetic human disease on this planet, we have caring people who WILL step up and help each other when the need is there! In fact, Katrina would be the best nick name that a person could hope for right now!
