Can using a Mac raise your IQ?

Yes, I'm exaggerating. But it's fun to see some evidence for what many of us have known all along ; )

I'm in the process of buying a new laptop, and I'm waffling between a Mac 12" Powerbook and a 14" widescreen PC laptop. A report from Nielsen/NetRatings found that those who use Macs tend to be better educated and make... [Read More]

it's true, and the reason for it is selection bias - mac's dont make people smarter, smart people choose macs. you could consider windows users the baseline population, thus benchmark iq 100 on that score, and the mac users will always score over 100 as an average because smarter people know... macs are better.

i say this is so because smart people can see through marketing, and thus they see the truth behind the matters which naturally leads them to picking mac.

Macs cost more money, so Mac users tend to be wealthier. Everything else in this article (higher education, more free time to spend online) is true of wealthier people in general, so the conclusion could easily be not that using Macs makes someone smart, nor that being smart makes someone buy a Mac, but rather just that wealthier people buy more expensive stuff. But as a Mac user myself, I'll go with Ryan's eplanation: smart people buy Macs.

The problem of an implication, which isn't
symmetrical. Mac Users are smarter! But
'Using a Mac' don't make you smart.

Exactly. NEWS FLASH! BMW owners are smarter than Ford Festiva owners!

Using a Mac won't make you smart. Using a Mac to program the Next Big App / Web Service might. Using it to write a great novel might, or maybe using it to create your PhD work. Just using it for surfing the web or for email may actually make you less intelligent over time, as it's so user-friendly it presents no challenge to the little grey cells. If you want a computer which by merely using it you'll get smarter, you might want to get into building a replica of ENIAC or the like. As others have said, using a Mac is just a symptom of having a high IQ.

Hmmm. Correlation? Causation? What's the difference again? =D

I'd like to see the same study done with GNU/Linux.

Mac users are not only smarter, they are younger, richer and better looking. Now lets talk about unix users....
